From immemorial time, new beliefs have emerged, sometimes in the heart of established religions, sometimes in competition with them. Often, these new beliefs have been described as "heresies" or even "false religions". However, it has also happened that these new beliefs are not experienced as "religions", and therefore neither true nor false. The opposition between religion and philosophy, between religion and superstition, between religion and para-science, between religion and para-psychological practices, mindfulness etc. are good examples. These questions have high historical interest but constitute also a contemporary issue in secularized societies characterized by a growing diffraction of habits and individual practices of meaning.

This approach is not to be limited to the analysis of metaphorical figures, such as those of "civil religions". It is about questioning the capacity of a society, in time and space, to consider the emergence of new competing practices by relating them to other horizons of meaning, definitively deprived of any religious reference or isomorphism.

The ability of great traditions, including secular traditions, to raise or obscure such redefinitions will be addressed, and comparative observations will be opened from a wide variety of disciplines.

The symposium will give priority to multidisciplinary dialogues and methodological issues, in particular between historians, theologians, socio-anthropologists and jurists, through a diversity of cultural outlook and religious context.

The list of invited speakers includes a.o. Danièle Hervieu-Léger, Vinciane Pirenne, Grace Davie and Silvio Ferrari.

De tout temps de nouvelles croyances ont émergé, tantôt au cœur de religions établies, tantôt en concurrence avec elles. Souvent, ces nouvelles croyances ont été qualifiées d’« hérésies » voire de « fausses religions ». Il est toutefois également arrivé que ces nouvelles croyances ne soient pas vécues comme des « religions », et dès lors ni vraies, ni fausses. L’opposition entre religion et philosophie, entre religion et superstition, entre religion et para-sciences, entre religion et pratiques para-psychologiques, mindfulness etc sont de bons exemples. Ces questions revêtent un intérêt historique mais aussi un enjeu contemporain dans les sociétés sécularisées caractérisées par une diffraction croissante des usages et des pratiques individuelles du sens. 

Il ne s’agit pas de se limiter ici à l’analyse de figures métaphoriques, comme par exemple celles des « religions civiles ». Il s’agit de s’interroger sur la capacité d’une société, dans le temps comme dans l’espace, à qualifier l’émergence de nouvelles pratiques concurrentes en les imputant à d’autres horizons de sens, étrangers à toute référence « religieuse » ou « isomorphique ».

On s’interrogera sur la capacité des grandes traditions, y compris laïques, à susciter ou à occulter de telles requalifications et on s’ouvrira à des observations comparatives, au départ d’une large diversité de disciplines ayant pour objet le religieux.

Le colloque donnera priorité à des dialogues et des interrogations pluridisciplinaires et méthodologiques, notamment entre historiens, théologiens, socio-anthropologues et juristes, à travers une diversité d’horizons culturels et religieux.

Sinds mensenheugnis ontstaan er nieuwe vormen van geloof, soms in het hart van gevestigde religies, soms zelfs in competitie met hen. Vaak worden deze nieuwe vormen van geloof gekwalificeerd als ketterij of valse religie. Soms worden deze nieuwe vormen van geloof evenwel niet als religies ervaren en dus niet als waar of vals. De tegenstelling tussen religie en filosofie, tussen religie en bijgeloof, russen religie en parawetenschappen, tussen religie en parapsychologische praktijken, mindfullnes e.d. zijn hiervan goede voorbeelden. Deze vragen hebben een groot historisch belang maar vormen tezelfdertijd ook een actuele kwestie in geseculariseerde samenlevingen die gekarakteriseerd worden door een groeiende diffractie van gebruiken en individuele zingevingspraktijken.

We willen ons hier niet beperken tot de analyse van metaforische figuren als deze van de ‘civil religion’.  Het gaat ons om een analyse van het vermogen van samenlevingen, over tijd en ruimte heen, om nieuwe concurrerende praktijken te kwalificeren door hen te verbinden met andere betekenishorizonten, duidelijk ontdaan van enige religieuze of isomorfe referentie.

In dit symposium willen we ons richten op het vermogen van grote tradities, inclusief seculiere tradities, om zulke herdefinities op te wekken of te verdoezelen en ons hierbij openstellen voor comparatieve observaties vanuit een brede waaier aan disciplines.

Het symposium geeft in dit alles de prioriteit aan multidisciplinaire en methodologische dialogen, in het bijzonder tussen historici, theologen, sociale wetenschappers en juristen, doorheen een diversiteit van culturele en religieuze horizonten.

Tot de invited speakers behoren Danièle Hervieu-Léger, Vinciane Pirenne, Grace Davie and Silvio Ferrari. Daarnaast is er ook volop ruimte voor het indienen van eigen voorstellen.

Call for Papers / Propositions / Voorstellen

Onderzoekers uit binnen- en buitenland worden uitgenodigd een voorstel in te dienen voor een eigen presentatie (30 minuten). Voorstellen (in het Engels, Frans of Nederlands) dient men op te sturen naar Prof. Louis-Léon Christians (louis-leon.christians@uclouvain.be) voor 1 maart 2019. Het wetenschappelijk comité zal de voorstellen bestuderen in de loop van maart 2019.

Researchers from Belgium and abroad are invited to submit an abstract for a 30-minutes presentation. Proposals (in English, French or Dutch) are to be sent to Prof. Louis-Léon Christians (louis-leon.christians@uclouvain.be) before March 1st  2019. The scientific committee will review the proposals during March 2019.
