Call for Papers BABEL COLLOQUIUM 2013

Call for Papers, Colloquium BABEL-Religies-Religions
Belgian Association for the Study of Religions

When a religion comes to an end …
Political and social factors in the demise of religions

Brussels, ULB, 9-11 september 2013

This colloquium sets out to analyse the political and social factors that cause or accompany the demise of religion(s). The colloquium allows for the broadest possible geographical and chronological variation: proposals can be on any part of the world or period in world-history. The aim is to give the floor both to foreign specialists with an international reputation and to Belgian scholars who would like to present their research to their colleagues.

Possible topics  are:

  • What happens to the sanctuaries?

  • Are they destroyed or are they given a new function?

  • What happens to cultic objects?

  • What becomes of the clergy?

  • Do the new holy texts include elements from earlier traditions?

  • Are rituals and festivals fused into a new syncretic system?

  • Which aspects of the former cult ar to be found in the new?

  • If the old convictions and customs have disappeared within a context of conflict, who was actively involved, what legislative or other measures did they take?

  • What strategies, in the human, material and legal sphere, are used to impose the new faith?

Proposals of no more than 300 words (in English, Dutch, French or German) should be sent to Danny Praet (cfr. infra contact) - at the latest - by January 1, 2013.

The scientific committee of the colloquium will decide by the end of January 2013 which proposals will be accepted.
